Dr. Richard E. Boyd Jr. is excited to welcome patients to River City Orthodontics and begin this new chapter serving families throughout the Richmond area. Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina, he was inspired by watching his father create confident, healthy smiles through orthodontics, a passion that ultimately led him to pursue the same rewarding career.
Education & Training
Dr. Boyd earned his Bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science from Furman University. During high school and college, he worked at Boyd Orthodontics as both a lab technician and orthodontic assistant, gaining valuable hands-on experience before attending the James B. Edwards School of Dental Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).
While at MUSC, Dr. Boyd earned his Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) and met his wife, Dr. Ali Byrd Boyd. The two were married in 2021 in her hometown of Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Dr. Boyd completed his orthodontic residency at Tufts University, where he received advanced specialty training in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics.
Bringing Exceptional Orthodontic Care to Richmond
Although Dr. Boyd and Dr. Ali enjoyed their time in South Carolina and the Northeast, they are excited to call Richmond home. They have settled in Glen Allen, Virginia, where they are building their lives together and serving the local community through River City Orthodontics.
Dr. Boyd is passionate about creating personalized treatment plans and providing exceptional orthodontic care in a welcoming, patient-centered environment.
Life Outside the Office
When he’s not creating beautiful smiles, Dr. Boyd enjoys spending time with his wife, Dr. Ali, their daughter, Hadley James, who was born on September 7, 2023, and their two British Labs, Lilly and Lyla.
His favorite hobbies include boating, scuba diving, cooking, and playing cards with his wife. Together, they have recently mastered the art of making sushi, so be sure to ask Dr. Boyd about their latest creations during your next visit!
